You must be 18 or older. These sessions involve appearing on video with people you have not met.
The session opens together, with an expert on hand to answer factual questions. You are then placed in a small group with other participants to talk through the choices. Speaking time is structured so that no one person dominates. There is no moderator directing the conversation, and an expert may not be in every small group.
You can take part without turning your camera on.
If you would rather not be recorded, you can leave before the session begins or take part with your camera off.
After the sessions we give partner newsrooms short excerpts from the discussions, with names and identifying details removed. A newsroom may quote these as the words of a participant.
We choose which excerpts go out. Anything we do not select is never distributed.
Your name is never attached. If there is something you would rather we did not quote, email hello@weigh.in and we will leave it out, as long as excerpts have not already gone to newsrooms. Once they have, we can pass a request along, but we cannot recall something already published.
At the end of the session we will ask whether you would be willing to speak with a newsroom covering the project. If you say yes, we pass your name and email to a participating newsroom and a reporter may get in touch. Anything you say to them is between you and them.
Saying no changes nothing else about your participation, and you can change your mind later by emailing hello@weigh.in.
Do not record, screenshot, or stream the session yourself. Other participants agreed to talk with a small group, not with the internet.
You are free to talk and write publicly about your own views and your own experience of the session.
Please do not identify other participants by name or attribute specific statements to them. If you want to describe what someone else said, describe it without naming them.
People will disagree, sometimes strongly. That is the point.
Not acceptable: personal attacks, harassment, slurs, threats, or conduct that stops others from participating. We may remove someone from a session for any of these, and may decline to admit them to later sessions.
Partner newsrooms may promote these sessions and may report on what participants decided and what changed. They do not attend the sessions, do not receive recordings, and do not receive your name or email.
Your name and email are used to send you the link and reminders, and are deleted 60 days after the final session — unless you ask us to stay in touch, in which case we keep them until you tell us to stop. Full details are in our privacy policy.
